I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: Wearing masks everywhere is an inconvenience that I’d prefer to not have to deal with. It makes life more impersonal and less natural. For eons, humans have talked to each other face-to-face, and that just feels right. Of course, in this age of pandemic, it’s better to be safe than sorry, and take mask precautions when it makes sense, but when you look at the extremes that people are taking it too, some of it is nonsensical.
Casinos are crowded, so it probably makes sense to wear a mask if you’re going to be around a lot of other people, as I often am. That’s why most casinos nowadays make you wear a mask, and that’s why I always comply if they do, as you can see in many of my recent live streams. It’s a little weird, actually, that some casinos require masks, and some don’t. To each their own, I guess, but I’ll continue to wear them in really crowded places for a while, still. Same goes for crowded stores or other places with lots of people – better to be safe than sorry, even if it is a minor inconvenience.
But there’s no sense in being inconvenienced in any way when you’re isolated from other people, and yet, I see all kinds of people still wearing masks in utterly unnecessary situations. In this way, mask hype is way overblown. Do you really need a mask if you’re walking your dog alone in the middle of nowhere? Is a mask really essential if you’re going for a jog solo when there’s nobody else there? Are you really at risk of contracting covid when you’re driving by yourself in your own car? There’s just no way, but I still see many, many people doing this – it’s scary to think that so many people just react out of fear without thinking logically.
Still, I – like most of you, probably – am looking forward to a time soon when we don’t have to wear masks at all anymore. But when will this be? Once vaccines are widely available, we should be able to stop wearing masks, right? WRONG, according to many so-called experts. Some say we’ll still need to wear masks for another year before we can stop. And from other people, I’ve heard that masks should be worn until infections are at the level of zero. ZERO?! That might never happen, so do those people expect us to wear masks forever?
Look, I’m all for taking reasonable precautions, but the key word is reasonable. Each of us has to assess risk on a daily basis, and some people like to be more cautious than others. But, in my opinion, we should balance that risk against living life in an enjoyable way. I’ll continue to wear masks in casinos while infections are so high, and while there are no vaccines, but once the risk has been dramatically reduced, I don’t want to live in fear anymore. Like I said, it’s not a major inconvenience; it’s a minor one. But why deal with any inconvenience if you don’t have to? Hopefully, in short time, the climate will be right to stop wearing masks everywhere. The risk won’t be zero, but if you want zero risk in life, then go live in a closet – the rest of us will be out there living life like we’re supposed to: mask-free, enjoying the company of other people, and (hopefully) winning jackpots.
